Members had a great evening drawing and painting these lovely still lifes on a gardening theme. The resulting work was jolly good!
It it with great sadness that we announce the death of longstanding and dearly loved member of Gravesend Art Group Pauline Cunningham. Pauline was in the past committee member, was Chair for many years and was a very important part of the group. She was a regular attendee at group meetings and only recently resigned her membership because mobility issues prevented her attendance. Pauline took park in all the exhibitions and was very good company when one was paired with her for stewarding. Pauline would offer her garden on more than one occasion for plein air work mixed with social events. One of these events from 2023 is on the News page, a very enjoyable evenings - such an hospitable lady. Pauline took part in group holidays and trips and even had the distress on one occasion of being left behind at Flaxford Mill. The group realised halfway down the M11! Pauline was not amused.
One member posted on Facebook “Pauline was an amazingly strong lady and a wonderful artist and printmaker”. Another member posted “We will all miss Pauline. She was a marvellous Printmaker and she always knew about the safe use of chemicals. Her prints were marvellous. Pauline produced many interesting paintings at GAG.”
Her family shared this lovely photo of herself as a young woman. Here is some of her work that has been on this website in the past. Dot lowe has provided some lovely photos of Pauline from her days in the group.
It is with great sorrow we announce the death of our President Nick Bannister. Nick was the longest running member of the group having, we think, joined in the 1970s or early 1980s. Nick was the Treasurer for 18 years until 2014. He was Vice Chair in 2015 and the Chair of GAG from 2016-2021 when he became our President. He worked mainly in pastels and samples of his work are displayed here. Nick loved to give a speech and would entertain us at exhibition openings, our Annual Dinners and Christmas parties. He would always recognise and thank those committee members who contributed to the smooth running of the group. In 2017 Nick posed as Father Christmas for a life drawing session as seen here. Though Nick has not been attending very much in the past couple of years due to either ill health or family commitments Nick will be sorely missed by those who knew him.
We are also sorry to announce the death of Colin Wright who was a member until recently. Colin and his partner Sandy joined the group around 2011. Colin served briefly as Vice Chair. Colin worked in pastels and gave a demonstration to the group on how to get the best from our pastels. His work was very detailed and he was extremely talented. In 2019 he ran another session on drawing pen and ink figures and some of the images are shown here.
Both these members died on the same day as the funeral for former member Pauline Cunningham and it has been a shock to us all.
